The Friends of Douglass Greene Park, in partnership with Usher’s (the singer) New Look Foundation, is recruiting a few dozen Brooklyn high school students to participate in the NYC branch of this highly acclaimed youth leadership program. Currently recruiting students who are entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grades this fall 2013. Orientation will be held in September.
The mission of Usher’s New Look Foundation, a 501c3, is to train youth in four leadership pillars: Talent, Education, Career & Service — to ensure their success as leaders throughout the world. The youth would need to commit to the full program throughout their high school years and there is a post-secondary continuing program they would continue in as well.
9th to 12th Grade, National Program Certification Elements: Develop innovation and critical-thinking skills to lead a Powered By Service project; Receipt of a university-backed leadership certification; Lead presenters at World Leadership Conference; Gain business and community service skills through partnership and travel opportunities with local, national and international organizations; Invitation to attend World Leadership Conference (see http://www.ushersnewlook.org/about-us/new-looks-model)
Students would need to attend TWO sessions per month. Each session is 2-hours long.
New Look’s selection criteria includes leadership potential, commitment to the community, and diversity.
To qualify, students must meet criteria such as be from a single parent household or qualify for free or reduced lunch, or have an Incarcerated parent, or be from an underserved community with lack of access to resources, or be first in your family to attend college.
