Greetings from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York! Our new students have arrived, followed by our continuing students, and classes are in session. The energy and excitement surrounding the beginning of a new year is palpable and enriching!
You play a large part in making it happen, because you are at the front-end and middle of students planning for college; the very ones who eventually make their way to us. As you serve your students and families, consider adding St. Lawrence to students’ lists. Here is a summary of the St. Lawrence message to help guide you:
“St. Lawrence University is a vibrant, collaborative community of learners who value thought and action. Students tap their full potential as they embrace the natural environment, engage with global challenges, and experience the relevance and adventure of a liberal arts education in a complex and changing world.”
- Three weeks ago we learned the New York State Education Department approved our new major, Business in the Liberal Arts. Students pursuing that major will also pursue a second major of their choice, producing a solid foundation in business and in the liberal arts.
- Our new residence hall is nearing 50 percent completion and will be ready for students next fall. It will feature many amenities and environmental benefits including geo-thermal heating and cooling.
- In July, we welcomed Jeremy Freeman as our new director of admissions. After serving St. Lawrence for 22 years, Alison Almasian, director of admissions, moved to your side of the desk, returning to her alma mater, Taft School.
- Actor and St. Lawrence alumnus, Kirk Douglas ’39, made a multi-million dollar gift from his family foundation to create the Kirk Douglas Scholarship program, providing funds for scholarships and programming.
St. Lawrence Class of 2017
This is the profile of the new students who just joined us. Our admit rate was 46 percent, and 31 percent of those admitted joined us. We set another record in the numbers and percentage of international students and enrolled the second largest class of U.S. students of color. St. Lawrence continues to be test-optional, but 59 percent of the entering class submitted scores and the mid-50 percentile range was 1710-1930 for all three sections.
St. Lawrence continues to be affordable for students from all socio-economic backgrounds. The mean financial aid award was $33,155 and 97 percent of our students received some financial assistance. Eighteen percent of our new students are Pell-eligible. We provide generous merit and need-based assistance.
St. Lawrence uses the Common Application exclusively. We offer Early Decision and Regular Decision. Our “official” Early Decision deadline is November 1, but we offer Early Decision on a continual review basis until February 1. Our Regular Decision deadline is February 1.
This fall we will host two Campus Visit Days on Monday, October 14 and Monday, November 11. In the spring we will host two Campus Visit Days on Monday, February 17 and Friday, March 28 for juniors. We hope the spring programs will support your advice to students to begin campus visits in the spring of their junior year.
Thank you for the service you provide to students and their families. I appreciate the partnership we have in this wonderful and worthwhile profession.
Best wishes to you and have a great year!
